Pete Lawrence RE

I attended art college in Bristol for four years specialising in illustration where my personal tutor was Peter Reddick. Did a lot of printmaking but no wood engraving which was not on the curriculum. Worked as a freelance illustrator. Painted murals for a Bristol bookshop and then worked as the designer at the University. Moved to Oxford in 1978 to join a specialist firm of educational book designers. Designed major series for leading UK and overseas publishers. Joined the Society of Wood Engravers and began to engrave in 1990. Exhibited in their annual touring shows and was elected to full membership in 1998. I have since exhibited in the National Print Exhibition, winning one of the engraving awards, and in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. My full time job as Managing Director of Oxford Designers & Illustrators means my engraving output each year is small, but I enjoy the luxury of following my own instincts and producing work by hand. Although my work has become increasingly abstract, I like the feeling of being part of a long tradition.
