Neil Drury

I have lived and worked as an artist in Oxford for over 15 years. Although initially I used a variety of media, I have made pastel my speciality, and now favour it above all media for its vividness, its versatility, and the purity of its hues. I often use pastel in combination with oil, watercolour and acrylic, to expand and enhance the vocabulary of image-making.

Choosing often to work quite large - my subject matter springs from the interaction of colour and natural, organic forms: flowers, fruits, landscapes and cityscapes - the drama of line, texture and tone. Human figures and animals appear occasionally - forms also resolve themselves into abstraction - but colour remains a constant.

My influences range between Bonnard and Matisse for their profoundly human use of colour and line in composition - to Chagall, Beckmann and Soutine for the intensity and depth of insight in their visual expression. I also enjoy the work of the contemporary painters Paula Rego, David Blackburn, Mary Newcomb, Patrick Proctor and Sandra Blow.
